NPS Centennial
APPL is working with a coalition of
other nonprofits and the National Parks Conservation Association to
advocate for the
National Parks Centennial Fund Challenge Act.
What APPL Members Can Do To Help
- Contact your Representatives and Senators to ask for a
meeting when they are in their district offices. Even if an
actual meeting is not possible the request is just as important
as it let’s them know that this legislation is important to
their constituents. Encourage your board and your members to do
so as well. The more your congressional representatives hear
from the public, especially those from their district, the more
attention they will pay to the legislation.
- Push for cosponsors of both the House and Senate bills. The
links above will take you to information on the bills and who
has signed on as a cosponsor. If your member has already
cosponsored let them know that you appreciate it and thank them
for their support.
- It is just as important to let Congress know about projects
that have already been funded as well as projects that did not
make this year’s list. Let them know that without this
legislation those projects are in danger of not getting funding
and the importance of those projects to your park and the
communities it will serve.
Key Questions/Concerns to Address
While the program is seen universally as a positive one there have
been a few concerns.
Q - Funding – Where will it come from?
A – Negotiations are ongoing with OMB to find the money to offset
the program
Q – Why does the funding have to be mandatory spending instead of
appropriated funds?
A – The only way that this program will truly work if the funds are
from outside the appropriations process. That way the money is not
taken away from other NPS funds. It also ensures that the matching
funds are available for the partner $’s.
Q – Does the match have to be mandatory?
A – The legislation is written to give priority to matching. There
is, however, a requirement that funds be made available to parks
that do not have any partners.
