The
National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) has
signed an agreement with APPL to initiate a new capacity
building and Webinar-based training program, The Power of
Friends. The program will begin with a 90 minute
session at the APPL convention in San Diego on February 8,
which will be followed by three online training sessions to
take place between March and July of 2010. The Webinars will
focus on the following topics: Providing Authentic Programs
and Experiences through Partnerships; Nonprofit Governance;
Fundraising and Friend-raising. The content will be
developed and provided by APPL’s Training Corps or other
specialists with in-depth field expertise.

Isle
Royale & Keweenaw Parks Association has rejoined APPL as
a Nonprofit member. Formerly known as the Isle Royale
Natural History Association, they are a National Park
Service Cooperating Association working with Isle Royale
National Park and Keweenaw National Historical Park.
The
National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) is APPL’s
newest Nonprofit Ally member.
NPCA joins the
Student
Conservation Association and the
National
Association for Interpretation in this Associate level
membership category designed to engage national or regional
nonprofits that serve public lands in ways other than
interpretive sales, site based education programs, site
specific philanthropy, and/or site specific advocacy.

Applications are available for the 2010 Boyd Evison
Graduate Research Fellowship. The Evison Fellowship
provides whole or substantial support for new graduate
studies that increase public awareness of the importance of
science to parks and of parks to science. Applications must
be postmarked by February 12; the recipient will be
announced on April 15. For further information or to request
an application, please write to Boyd Evison Graduate

APPL's Vendor Support
Program (VSP) helps enhance the network of nonprofit
public lands organizations.
Donate
now
and begin receiving year round benefits
GeoQuest Technologies is our newest VSP Benefactor. GeoQuest
helps destinations "tell their story". They provide interpretive
tools for mobile devices such as the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android
phones. They have developed guided tours of national parks and other
destinations that are available for sale on iTunes and other online
application stores. They also help destinations with a retail option
of renting out iPhones with the tours on the device.
American Traditions Basket Company is a new VSP
Contributor. They are produces of American-made, hand woven,
commemorative and fundraising baskets.
Renee's
Garden has also made a donation to VSP at the Contributor level.
They offer seeds to nurture nature's pollinators as well as
butterfly garden and hummingbird garden seeds.

- Margaret “Peggy” O’Dell’s innovative approach to park
management has earned her the Fran P. Mainella Award.

- Shelton Johnson, interpretive park ranger at Yosemite
National Park, has been selected as the recipient of the 2009
Freeman Tilden Award. This is the highest award given by the
National Park Service for excellence in interpretation.

- Author and filmmaker Dayton R. Duncan was named winner of
the William C. Everhart Award. The Everhart Award, named for a
former National Park Service chief of interpretation, recognizes
a professional for sustained achievements in park or historic
site interpretation. Duncan also delivered the annual George B.
Hartzog Jr. Lecture following the awards ceremony.
